READING
Every week we read a story from our McGraw/Hill reading book. We read the story together as a class and in reading groups. Have your child bring his/her book home so that you can read the story together. This is a great way for you to see your child's reading develop. First read the story to them. This helps them become fluent readers. Next have your child read the story to you. Help them sound out any words that might be difficult for them. Finally, ask them questions about the story. This encourages comprehension. Have your child track the words with his finger as he reads.
AR BOOKS
Reading frequently helps students become stronger readers. To encourage frequent reading, Tahoka Elementary uses the "Accelerated Reading" Program. Students are tested on books that are in this system and points are accumulated throughout the school year. Students can check out books from the School Library daily. Books can also be checked out from the City-County Library, Lubbock Libraries, or read books from home. You will need to check to see if the chosen book is an A.R. book. Pizza Hut "Book It"
Our class is also participating in the "Book It!" program sponsored by Pizza Hut. This reward system also follows the A.R. system. When a student reaches 7 points for the month, he/she will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. The Book It!" program begans in October and runs through May. This is just another way to reward your child for working hard to become a better reader.

Every six weeks we will have a list of High Frequency words. Every students needs to be able to read these words by the end of the six weeks. I will test them the last week of every six week period.
